The Sequel I Wanted…. But Didn’t Get

Yeah, belles & beaus, I know it says films I adore. I adored the first one so it’s okay.

However as much as I will sing the praises of Vin Diesel and the characters he plays, this movie hit rock bottom faster than dropping a bowling ball out of a third story window for me. Yep, you read that right. As someone who infinitely loved the original xXx movie, this one sucked. A little less than the one with Ice Cube in it, but it still sucked. I wanted to love it, I really and truly did. But it did not happen.

I promise not to spoil anything, but it’s gonna get ugly ya’ll.

So movie opens up and it’s 10 years or so since the first movie? I’m guessing at this. But basically Gibbons and everyone with the xXx program seem to believe that Xander Cage is dead – though it is eventually revealed that Gibbons never really thought he was dead. The opening had me wanting to scream, but I couldn’t because I was watching it in a quiet space. Seriously, love Sam L. Jackson for the torture they put his characters through. Let’s just say, if you’ve seen any of the Avengers movies, you know exactly what they did to Gibbons. There I spoiled it but didn’t spoil it!

So movie goes on to show that Xander has been traveling all over the world pretty much attempting to make the world a better place and righting the horrible horrible wrongs of the world – like over priced television. There is no sign of the Russian beauty Elena from the first movie. The cast was star studded, of course, including the beautiful Ruby Rose who did an amazing job.

I’m not saying the acting was subpar – other than I was thoroughly unimpressed with Nina Dobrev in this movie. She was a Xander Cage groupie if I’d ever seen one in these movies. But in all I was impressed by the talent that Vin choose for the movie along side the other producers.

What didn’t impress me was the story line. I found myself having to keep from fast forwarding through multiple parts because I just got plain bored. I’m sorry, Vin, but I can say this is the first movie that I absolutely found myself during that you were in. I was fully expecting the return of Xander Cage to the big screen to be the epic of epics. I was expecting world ending scenarios.. Sadly I got a Pandora’s box – really original, ya’ll – that caused satellites to come crashing out of our atmosphere. Seriously? Pretty sure that’s been done before ya’ll.

At least when they did the third Chronicles of Riddick movie, the story line being similiar to Pitch Black made complete sense by the end of it. But in xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, they used a story line that thoroughly bored me despite the amazing action sequences that littered it. I fully feel that I could have rewatched the first one and found much more enjoyment out of it.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it to some degree. I’d been hoping for a sequel to Vin’s version of xXx for a while… But sadly, this was not the sequel I had hoped for.

What movies have recently disappointed you in the story line area?

XOXO,

Trula Marie
