The Year of POC & LGBTQIA+ Voices

Hello, lovely soul,

I thought it would be nice to address the 2023 reading goals and what I personally am focusing on for the year as well as do a wrap up for the 2022 season of reading. I meant to do a whole 12 Days of Yuletide, but sadly sickness took over (aka I caught the flu for the first time in 29 years) and I just honestly couldn’t keep up.

I probably have read more POC & LGBTQIA+ voices than I think I have, but for 2023, I really wanted to focus centrally on them. If you have any additional recs to the list I will have below, feel free to comment and let me know the name of the book and the author.

So let’s review 2022 as it ended:

  • Books:
    • Goal: 12
    • End Total: 21
  • Pages:
    • Goal: 6,000
    • End Total: 8,575

One of the lovely additions to StoryGraph is setting a page reading goal, and as we can see I blew both out of the water – the books in six months and the pages not long after.

My routine is that if I meet my goal I can only add one book. If I go over it –  doesn’t matter how many – I add two books. As for pages this year, since I blew 6,000 out of the water, I’m moving that goal from what I originally stated I was going to do so as it stands 2023 is going to look like the following:

  • Book List:
    • Becoming by Michelle O’Bama
    • Conjuring Women  by Afic Atakiora
    • The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson
    • Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
    • Like a Sister by Kellye Garrett
    • Tell My Horse by Zora Neale Hurston
    • Braiding Sweet Grass by Robin Wall Kinmorer
    • Gods of Jade & Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
    • Her Majesty’s Royal Coven by Juno Dawson
    • The Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler
    • The Parable of the Talent by Octavia Butler
    • The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue V.E. Schwab
    • Untamed by Glennon Dayle
    • Bad Feminist by Roxanne Gay
    • Broken Horse  by Brandi Carlisle
  • Book Goal: 14
  • Page Goal: 8,000

So the book list is not the only books I will be reading for 2023 as I stated earlier. If you want to recommend books that fit within the criteria, then please send them on. I’m literally always wanting more books to read. Once I complete the list though – if no other recommendations come in -, I will be going back to my current “To Be Read” list and continuing to read the ones I currently have in my collection. I’m also planning on reading The Chronicles of Prydain but it’s not included with the list above.

I’m super excited to start in on the 2023 list and cannot wait to bring you all on book reviews. I’ll be doing shorts on TikTok and also uploading them to Instagram and Youtube. All the links are in their normal places. I’ll also be sharing the links in the Discord server that you can join.

Light & Love,

Trula Marie
