Hello, lovely soul,

I hope your day is going well whenever you are reading this and that it continues to go well.

If it’s not obvious, I devour books on a pretty regular basis. I also happen to love the Practical Magic book series. As I wanted to have them all in hardback because those last longer, I had a difficult time locating just Practical Magic in the newer style dust jackets to match them because I also like cohesion.

Why am I telling you this story?

The answer is simple. I discovered Book of the Month in my search because they were the only ones to exclusively have Practical Magic in hardback with the 25th anniversary cover. The only way to get the book however was to sign up for their monthly service.

I will admit the original plan was to order the first two books and then cancel it as soon as I had them. However, I decided to keep it for a couple months to try it out. That was in September/October of 2021. We’re now ten months down the road in June 2022 and I still have this subscription.

Why?

Well, who doesn’t want a brand new hardback book for less than $20?

If you just said no, I promise I’m not judging you. Hardbacks, actually physical books, aren’t for everyone! I understand that.

For me, however, I absolutely love hardbacks. My reasoning a lot of times is that if it’s a book I will read again later one, I prefer to have the hardbacks. They hold up to multiple readings better than a paperback does. Case in point, during my Twilight years I had two copies of the first book and I gave the movie tie-in to a friend to read. It fell apart on her in the middle of reading it. So in my house we are team hardback where we can be.

So if you’re keeping score for Book of the Month, it currently stands at one.

Onward we go to payment and how it functions.

I’m going to do my best to describe this but I may screw up the explanation.

So once you are subscribed, you are charged monthly as long as you receive a book each month. Wanna skip the month? Your credit is there on your account and you are not charged for the next month.

So for me, I always look at the books and really try to take a good educated guess on if I will like the book or not. I check out the reviews and all that because sometimes their synopsis just isn’t the best. And that’s okay!

In an attempt to better explain it, I was charged in February for my March subscription. Because I didn’t particularly want the books that month, I skipped March. When they released the April books at the end of March, I decided to get Like a Sister by Kellye Garrett – review will hopefully come out this year. So I used my credit that I was charged in February for the month of March to get my April book. Because I used that credit, I was charged in April for May.

Essentially, you don’t get charged if you skip a month. It’s glorious and I’m very grateful for that aspect.

So that’s now two points for Book of the Month.

Another awesome thing that I discovered as Mother’s Day draws nearer is that they give you the option to opt out of the Mother’s Day promotions. Now while I have a fantastic relationship with my mom and she’s still around, I know that some people aren’t that lucky, so you have that option!

Three points.

However, I will say that there are some pitfalls:

  • You only get to choose between 5-7 books each month.
  • You can do add-on books but you can’t have that book be your main book.
  • The synopsis that they provide really isn’t detailed enough – for me at least – to convince me if I want one of the books they’re offering. I usually have to go to GoodReads or StoryGraph to find a more in depth synopsis for me to decide if I’m going to get it or not.

That’s pretty much the only issues I have with it, which for me is a huge deal considering how picky I am about subscription services. And worst case for me is that if I don’t want to keep the book to read again down the line, we have a local McKay’s that I can drop it off at for store credit.

All in all, I highly recommend it. I also have a referral link that most of these services come with, so it is linked here if you want to maybe give it a wack. Fair warning, I do get a credit for every person who signs up using my link, but it’s there if you want to use it!

Light & Love,

Trula Marie
