Blessed Be the Fruit

Happy Friday, Belles & Beaux!

Welcome back to my library. I haven’t been this excited for a book since last year when Limetown, A Novel came out. I thoroughly enjoyed that one after becoming addicted to the podcast. I’ve already reviewed both and you can find those on the blog here, here, and here.

But today’s is a sequel to a book that has inspired a Hulu Original Series, protests, and many other things. Margaret Atwood told a story in a way that made it able to fit into any point and time in the history of our world after the creation of the automobile. Now, Atwood has released her sequel entitled The Testaments.

If you haven’t read it yet or heard of it, this book not only is the sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale but it also is the testimony of an aunt, an aunt in training, and a child outside of Gilead. The book then concludes with the Thirteenth Symposium, similar to how The Handmaid’s Tale ended.

Now, while this is a sequel to the prior book, it is not set up like the previous book. As I said this is testimony from three different people and it bounces between the three as they tell the story together. The three women first tell their story of their childhood, filling in the cracks. This seems to take place about thirteen years or so after the conclusion of the first book from what I could tell with the symposium taking place a year after the one at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale.

What I loved the most about this book is the characters it followed. I refuse to reveal who it is specifically because it was a huge surprise when I got to them and they were definitely worth it. I highly suggest going to your nearest book store or wherever you get your books so you can get your copy.

If you’ve finished, what did you enjoy (without spoilers) about the book?

XOXO,

Trula Marie
